Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr.

National Children's Book Week: 
Book 3:  Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr.
This book uses simple pictures and cute text to teach children the alphabet!

Activity 1:  Make your own coconut tree
Materials:  construction paper, a cookie sheets, magnet letters, packaging tape
Description:  Cut out a brown trunk and green leaves to make a coconut tree.  Tape the tree onto a magnetic cookie sheet.  After reading the book to your toddler, have your toddler make the magnetic letters climb the coconut tree!  They can do it in the ABC order, try to retell the story, or simply have fun playing with the different letters.  Help them name the letters and sounds as they play.
Skills Targeted:  teach your tot letter recognition, teach your tot letter sound recognition, teach your tot to play, teach your tot to retell a story

Activity 2:  Sandpaper Letters
Materials:  Sandpaper, glue, scissors, paper
Description:  Cut letters out of sandpaper and glue them onto pieces of paper (You can punch a hole in each paper and attach them with a ring to make a book).  Use your toddler's finger to trace each letter and say its name and sound.  This is great letter practice that includes several of their senses!
