Wheels

Activities:

Paint With Wheels:
Materials: paper, paint, matchbox car or truck
Description: Squirt some paint on a piece of paper (have your toddler tell you what color it is). Your child can drive their matchbox car or truck through the paint and make tire marks all over their paper. The car or truck's wheels make neat patterns. You can add different color paint and use different cars with different size wheels to make a variety of patterns and colors on the paper.
Skills Targeted: teach your tot color recognition, teach your tot to be creative, teach your tot motor skill development, teach your tot that wheels are round




Pin the Wheels on the Truck:
Materials: large poster board, markers or crayons, scissors, paper
Description: Draw a large picture of a truck or car onto a piece of poster board. Do not draw the wheels on the picture. On a separate sheet of paper, draw and cut out two wheels. Put double sided tape on the back of each wheel. Give the wheels to your toddler and have them tell you what shape they are. You can blind fold them and have them try to place the wheels on the picture. (If your child is young or does not want to be blindfolded, have them put the wheels on where they belong on the car or truck without a blindfold.)

Count the Wheels:
Description: Take your toddler outside and show them the wheels on your car or truck. (for safety reason, do not let your toddler touch the wheels). Ask your toddler to tell you what shape the wheels are. Together you and your toddler can walk around the car or truck and count the wheels. If you would rather, you could also do this simple activity using a wagon.

Cardboard Train, with Wheels:
Materials: cardboard box, heavy cardstock or cardboard, glue, scissors, markers
Description: You and your toddler will have fun together making a cardboard box train. If your cardboard box has writing on it, you may want to cover it with white wrapping paper or packaging paper. Your toddler can decorate their train using paint, crayons or markers. Using cardstock or extra cardboard, cut four circles and glue on the sides of the cardboard box for the wheels. Have your toddler tell you what shape the wheels are and count them together as your glue them on. Your little one can sit in the cardboard box and pretend that they are an engine conductor and that the wheels are making them go!

Shape Truck:
Materials: construction paper, scissors, glue
Description: cut a rectangle, a square and two circles out of construction paper. Show the shapes too your toddler and have them tell you what shape and color they are. Glue the shapes together to create a truck. Have your toddler glue the wheels on last. Talk about the wheels and what they do (go round and round and help the truck move).

The Wheels on the ______:
Materials: draw or print pictures of a bus, car, truck, train, plane, bike, wagon, popsicle sticks, glue, scissors
Description: Draw or print (from clip art on your computer) pictures of a bus, car, truck, train, plane, bike and wagon. Cut out the pictures and glue them onto popsicle sticks. Sing The Wheels on the _______ song found below under Songs and Finger plays. Hold up each vehicle as you sing about them. Or you could have your toddler hold each vehicle as you sing the song together. Skills Targeted: teach your tot to identify objects that have wheels, teach your tot that wheels are round, teach your tot language development

Toy Trucks, Cars, and Trains:
Materials: small toy trucks, cars, trains or other things with wheels, sand, rocks
Description: Create a variety of different terrains for your toddler to drive their toy cars over. Use a sand table or create your own sand table by putting sand in a shallow dish. Place rocks in another shallow dish. You could also put a small amount of water in a third shallow dish. Have you toddler play with their toys in these different terrains. Talk to your toddler as you play. Is it harder to drive the toys through sand, water, or rocks?
Skills Targeted: teach your tot to use their imagination, teach your tot language development, teach your tot to compare and contrast, teach your tot that wheels help objects move, teach your tot to play

Circle Collage:
Materials: a variety of circle objects (ex: a coin, a pinwheel pasta, a poker chip, buttons, paper circles etc), a variety of other shaped objects (stickers, stamps, magnets etc), glue, paper
Description: Show your toddler a picture of a wheel. Ask you toddler to tell you what shape the wheel is. Lay out a variety of different shaped objects (including circles). Have your toddler choose all the shapes that are the same as the wheel (circles) and glue them to a piece of paper creating a circle collage. Write the word circle on the top of the paper. Count all the circles when they are done.

Wheel Pasta:
Materials: pinwheel pasta, pictures of bikes, cars, trucks, wagons etc.
Description: Draw or print from clip art pictures of vehicles with wheels. Show the pictures to your toddler and have them identify the wheels. Have them glue pinwheel pasta on top of each wheel. Count all the wheels when they are finished. You do an extension of this activity and give your toddler pictures of the vehicles but leave off the wheels. They can glue the pinwheel pasta where the wheels should go. I used coins instead of pinwheel pasta (you could use anything that is round for this activity).
