Before you go outside and look for and count trucks, grab a piece of paper and a pencil (marker or crayon). I gave my daughter a clipboard also, because clipboards just make everything more interesting! :-)
Each time a truck passes by, have your toddler make a tally mark. When you are finished looking for trucks have your toddler count their tally marks and tell you how many trucks they saw. Then you can write that number for your toddler (or they can write it themselves).
Another activity that we did this week was adding trucks. I simply put two trucks on a white board (you could also use a piece of paper) and had my daughter tell me how many. Then I wrote the number 2. Next I put one more truck on the white board. She told me how many and I wrote the number 1. I encouraged her to "add" the trucks, or tell me how many in all.
Actually using the addition and equals sign is a little advanced, but it introduces this skill and also enhances her counting skills. Please feel free to leave comments and let me know what activities you enjoy! Have a great truck week!
